The Indian benchmark indices ended higher in choppy trade on Monday on strong buying across auto and metal space ahead of a Reserve Bank of India policy review on Wednesday. Globally, Asian stocks ended lower while Euro markets skid in opening, as investors turned jittery after the Italian PM Renzi conceded defeat and called it quits after the Italians voted No for the constitutional amendment referendum.The 30-share benchmark index closed trade at 26349.1, up by 118.44 points or by 0.45 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8128.75, up by 41.95 points or by 0.52 per cent.
In the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 26390.8 and intraday low of 26125.35, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8141.9 and intraday low of 8056.85.
The industry expects a 25 bps rate cut on Wednesday amid downside risks to growth following the notes ban and subdued inflation, says a DBS report.
In line with benchmark indices, the broader market also ended in positive terrain with the BSE MIDCAP closing at 12280.06, up by 80.88 points or by 0.66 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP settled at 12114.72, up by 31.52 points or by 0.26 per cent.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 937.95,+3.58%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1181.45,+3.29%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1536.60,+3.22%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 327.45,+2.73%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5204.30,+2.68%), among others.
On the flip side, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1218.55,-1.73%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2186.45,-1.68%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 427.15,-1.09%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 713.05,-0.89%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 456.45,-0.79%), were among top losers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, auto and metal stocks emerged as top gainers, adding as much as 1.92 per cent and 1.52 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2922, shares advanced were 1618 while 1155 shares declined and 149 were unchanged.
