Trimming all the losses, the 30-share benchmark Index managed to move in green during the late noon trading session amid fresh buying in index heavyweights including Wipro, Lupin, Power Grid and Gail among others.
At 14:20 hours, the BSE was trading at 28058.26 up by 7.38 points or by 0.03 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8671.85 down by 6.05 points or by 0.07 per cent.
In the volatile trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 28131.07 and an intraday low of 27926.17, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8698.75 and an intraday low of 8636.7.
Investors got some respite with the report that the GST Council headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley discussed a four-tier rate structure suggested by the Centre and agreed on compensation to loss-incurring states for the first five years of the new tax regime. Jaitley also informed that the GST Council meeting has reached a consensus on definition of revenue to compensate states for revenue loss from GST implementation. In scrip specific development, Sintex industries rose 1.5 per cent on news that Prominent Plastics has raised its stake in the company.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 495.75,+2.99%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 180.55,+2.38%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1515.90,+2.30%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 437.65,+1.91%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 271.10,+1.65%), among others.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 265.40,-1.85%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 241.35,-1.81%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3381.35,-0.85%), State Bank of India (Rs. 255.00,-0.74%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1342.25,-0.71%), among others.
Among the sectors, Power and healthcare indices were leading the gains while realty and FMCG still continued to witness selling pressure.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3023 , shares advanced were 1660 while 1148 shares declined and 215 were unchanged.
On the global front, Asian peers ended the day on a mixed note, while European counters were hovering in red.
