The Indian equity benchmarks ended tad higher, paring most of early gains, on Wednesday amid fresh buying by retail and foreign portfolio investors after the Income Tax (I-T) Department put on hold its controversial circular on taxing indirect transfers of Indian assets. Investors were also buoyed by strong earnings report by Indian Inc and clarity over GST rollout. Outperforming the benchmark indices, the broader markets ended on strong note, with MIDCAP and SMLCAP indices gaining 0.45 per cent to 0.61 per cent.

The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27257.64, up by 21.98 points or by 0.08 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8417, up by 19 points or by 0.23 per cent.

During the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 27422.67 and intraday low of 27217.65, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8460.3 and intraday low of 8397.4.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 467.60,+2.95%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 864.60,+2.86%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 197.85,+1.51%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1216.10,+0.87%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2295.00,+0.76%), among others.

On the flip side, NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 172.75,-1.65%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 439.35,-1.37%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3088.85,-1.37%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 313.70,-1.21%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2704.30,-0.94%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, metal and consumer durables stocks emerged as top gainers, adding as much as 2.27 per cent and 0.71 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 3077, shares advanced were 1569 while 1317 shares declined and 191 were unchanged.

Indian equity benchmarks ended in the positive territory on Tuesday, with benchmark index Sensex ended nearly 173 points higher, while NSE Nifty settled above 8,280-mark, on value-buying in select blue-chip stocks despite caution as December quarter corporate earnings season begins, amidst mixed cues from fellow Asian peers.

The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 26,899.56 up by 173.01 points or 0.65 per cent, while the NSE Nifty ended at 8,288.6 up by 52.55 points or 0.64 per cent.

Besides, investors keenly eyed the December quarter corporate earnings of IT bellwether TCS and rival Infosys to be unveiled on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Meanwhile, Indusind Bank on Tuesday reported its net profit of Rs 750.64 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2016, as compared to Rs 581.02 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2015, buoyed sentiment at D-Street.

During the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 26,914.95 and intraday low of 26,804.17, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8,293.8 and intraday low of 8,261.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 294.05,+3.25%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 515.30,+2.99%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 430.90,+2.10%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 924.35,+1.54%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1212.35,+1.46%), among others.

On the flip side, Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 447.35,-1.17%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3048.35,-0.58%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1216.45,-0.47%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 162.30,-0.43%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1487.55,-0.21%), was among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, metal and auto sector stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.31 per cent and 1.26 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE, out of the total 3,110 shares traded, 1,746 advanced while 1,219 shares declined and 145 remained unchanged.

The Indian benchmark indices ended higher in choppy trade on Monday on strong buying across auto and metal space ahead of a Reserve Bank of India policy review on Wednesday. Globally, Asian stocks ended lower while Euro markets skid in opening, as investors turned jittery after the Italian PM Renzi conceded defeat and called it quits after the Italians voted No for the constitutional amendment referendum.

The 30-share benchmark index closed trade at 26349.1, up by 118.44 points or by 0.45 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8128.75, up by 41.95 points or by 0.52 per cent.

In the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 26390.8 and intraday low of 26125.35, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8141.9 and intraday low of 8056.85.

The industry expects a 25 bps rate cut on Wednesday amid downside risks to growth following the notes ban and subdued inflation, says a DBS report.

In line with benchmark indices, the broader market also ended in positive terrain with the BSE MIDCAP closing at 12280.06, up by 80.88 points or by 0.66 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP settled at 12114.72, up by 31.52 points or by 0.26 per cent.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 937.95,+3.58%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1181.45,+3.29%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1536.60,+3.22%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 327.45,+2.73%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5204.30,+2.68%), among others.

On the flip side, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1218.55,-1.73%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2186.45,-1.68%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 427.15,-1.09%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 713.05,-0.89%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 456.45,-0.79%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, auto and metal stocks emerged as top gainers, adding as much as 1.92 per cent and 1.52 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2922, shares advanced were 1618 while 1155 shares declined and 149 were unchanged.
