Mid-Session: Sensex crosses 32K, Nifty surges 60 pts; ITC up 3%

The key benchmark continued to trade higher in the late morning deal on Thursday, tracking firm cues from Asian peers, as investors remained in upbeat mood ahead of the beginning of the June quarter earnings seasons. IT bellwether TCS will release Q1 results on July 13, 2017, while Infosys will declare its April-June quarter results on July 14, 2017. On the sectoral front, FMCG and capital goods stocks emerged as top gainer, rising as much as 1.59 per cent and 1.02 per cent respectively.

At 12:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 32033.55, up by 228.73 points or by 0.72 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9876.8, up by 60.7 points or by 0.62 per cent.

In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 32054.33 and intraday low of 31892.63, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9886.35 and intraday low of 9853.45.

ITC continued gaining streak and soared 3 per cent on the Bombay stock Exchange as investors widened bet on this company after the government successfully implemented the goods and services tax (GST) on July 1. According to data available with exchange, the scrip of the company rallied 20 per cent in past two months after the government unveiled plan to roll-out long pending new tax regime.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 338.50,+2.98%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 515.30,+1.58%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 296.90,+1.42%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1175.65,+1.34%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1658.45,+1.14%), among others.

On the flip side, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 160.50,-1.44%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 967.65,-0.63%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 458.40,-0.55%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 263.20,-0.28%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1372.70,-0.28%), were among top losers on the BSE.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2750, shares advanced were 1454 while 1150 shares declined and 146 were unchanged.
