The Indian equity benchmarks extended rally for the fifth straight session on Wednesday, driven by strong rally in frontline blue-chip such as Reliance Industries, Axis Bank, Coal India, Asian Paints, Hero MotoCorp, BPCL, ONGC, DLF and Tata Motors. However, weakness in broader markets capped day’s gain, with MidCap and SmallCap settled 0.6 per cent lower each. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed at 28864.71, up by 103.12 points or by 0.36 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8926.9, up by 19.05 points or by 0.21 per cent.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 355278 with a total turnover of Rs. 25656.99 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1538707 with a total turnover of Rs. 106844.98 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 6874219 with a total turnover of Rs. 498218.21 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 730715 with a total turnover of Rs. 50951.33 Crore.
As on February 22, 2017, the FIIs stood as net buyer in debt segment, but turned net seller in equity. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 7039.61 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 433.00 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 8993.23 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 391.68 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -1953.62 Crore and Rs. 41.32.

The Indian benchmarks are poised to open flat with positive bias on Thursday, tracking muted cues from fellow Asian peers after Wall Street ended mixed in overnight trade. After strong rally in the last few sessions, the market may see some volatility as investors will rollover their position ahead of February F&O expiry due today. Bullish trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for February delivery, which were trading at 8,928.50, up by 10.5 points or 0.12 per cent, at 11:04 AM Singapore time, also signaled a flat to positive opening for Sensex. On the economy front, IMF has lowered India GDP growth to 6.6 per cent in FY17, largely due to demonetization, while the agency expects growth to rebound to 7.2 per cent in FY18.
