Indian equities are set to open lower on Monday, tracking mixed cues from fellow Asian peers, as oil prices fell sharply on Monday, while Indian Central Statistics Office lowered India’s economic growth estimate to 7.1 per cent. Muted trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,272.50, up by 5 points or 0.06 per cent, at 10:55 AM Singapore time, also signaled a flat start for Sensex. Back home, the upcoming budget and assembly elections in UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur would be key event to watch for which will set future direction for markets.

On Friday, Indian equity benchmarks ended lower, erasing early gains, weighed down by losses in the IT and teck stocks after media reports suggested that the US Congressmen have reintroduced a bill to limit the use of H-1B visas, a move which would directly affect IT industry. However, appreciation in rupee and gain across bank, healthcare and metal stocks limited market losses. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 26759.23, down by 119.01 points or by 0.44 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8243.8, down by 30 points or by 0.36 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were State Bank of India 12354302.00, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. 8399536.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 8231949.00, Bank of Baroda 8101310.00, ITC Ltd. 8093288.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 94.80 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 18343.04 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 197837 with a total turnover of Rs. 13145.28 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 528559 with a total turnover of Rs. 34335.34 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 2675047 with a total turnover of Rs. 178328.31 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 286482 with a total turnover of Rs. 19254.29 Crore.

The FIIs on January 06, 2017 stood as net seller in equity but net seller in debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 4542.95 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1829.51 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 4585.82 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1079.02 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -42.87 Crore and Rs. 750.49
