Indian equities are poised to open the first trading session of year 2017 on subdued note in absence of any major trigger from global cues as most of Asian and US markets remained on eve of New Year's Day. Investors would react to cut in lending rates by most of the banks and new sops from the government for poor such as low-cost housing and other social benefits. On the corporate front, auto stocks will remain in focus as the companies would announce their December month sales number. Muted trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,176.00, up by 8.5 points or 0.10 per cent, at 10:46 AM Singapore time, also signaled a flat start for Sensex.

On Friday, the key domestic benchmark indices closed in a positive terrain in the last trading session of the year on sustained buying demand in index pivotals especially ITC and ICICI Bank. The market sentiments were bolstered by steady buying by domestic institutional investors on the domestic bourses. The Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex closed at 26626.46 up by 260.31 points or by 0.99 per cent, while the NSE Nifty closed at 8185.8 points, trading higher by 82.2 points or by 1.01 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were State Bank of India 10538497.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 10514365.00, ITC Ltd. 10420088.00, Hindalco Industries Ltd. 8199773.00, Idea Cellular Ltd. 6154929.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 81.83 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 14902.32 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 188808 with a total turnover of Rs. 12349.10 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 423373 with a total turnover of Rs. 26604.56 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 2193641 with a total turnover of Rs. 144034.12 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 200936 with a total turnover of Rs. 13045.07 Crore.

The FIIs on December 30, 2016 stood as net seller in equity but net buyer in debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 4482.30 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 349.80 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 5143.60 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 59.19 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -661.30 Crore and Rs. 290.61.
