The key domestic benchmark indices ended in a negative terrain in the late afternoon trading session as investors exited their positions on disappointing index of industrial production (IIP) data and mixed cues from fellow Asian peers amid caution ahead of Fed meet this week.
Sentiments also remained dampened as information technology stocks were hit by tough talk on visas by US president Donald Trump.
The investors also remained cautious ahead of domestic trade deficit data, November CPI inflation and WPI inflation to be announced later in the week.
The Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex closed at 26515.24 down by 231.94 points or by 0.87 per cent, while the NSE Nifty closed at 8270.8 points, trading lower by 90.95 points or by 1.1 per cent.
The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 26725.31 and an intraday low of 26468.59 while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8230.65 and an intraday low of 8154.45
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 311.30,+1.43 per cent), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 165.45,+0.82 per cent), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2206.25,+0.58 per cent), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 676.30,+0.49 per cent), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 185.10,+0.30 per cent), among others.
Meanwhile, Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 912.00,-3.15 per cent), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 444.60,-2.56 per cent), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2651.00,-2.52 per cent), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 454.55,-2.05 per cent), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3216.55,-1.97 per cent), were among the top losers on BSE.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total 2928 shares traded, 1182 shares advanced, 1605 shares declined while 141 were unchanged.
On the global front, Asian stocks closed mixed today ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting that is widely expected to raise U.S. interest rates and as oil prices soared after producers agreed to reduce output. US stocks closed higher in the previous trading session as traders were eyeing key data, including reports on housing, inflation, consumer spending and manufacturing apart from the crucial FOMC meeting in the next week.
