Pre Session-Positive opening seen for Sensex on firm global trend; US Presidential debate in focus

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap up opening on Thursday tracking a positive trend across markets in Asia and a strong finish at Wall Street overnight as a rally in crude oil prices to near a 15-month high following a surprise drop in US storage levels last week bolstered risk taking appetite. The focus was also on the final US Presidential debate currently underway with Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton going face to face with Republican candidate Donald Trump. A clear win for Clinton in the November election is expected to be a good omen for markets worldwide. Traders will keep a close eye on any clarity issued by the two US Presidential hopefuls on the subject of economic policy. Gains in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,691.5, up by 33.5 points or 0.39 per cent at 10:14 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open higher today. Shares of RIL, Yes Bank and Biocon will be in focus as these companies reveal their September quarter earnings. On the GST front, the centre and states have postponed a decision on the rate structure which will now be taken in November. Profit taking after Tuesday’s stellar rally and a mixed trend in global markets weighed on domestic bourses on Wednesday as the 30-share Sensex fell 66.51 points or by 0.24 per cent to end at 27,984.37.

Hopes that the European Central Bank which meets today for an interest rate decision may offer some cues over a possible extension to its bond buying program also supported sentiment. Shanghai Composite was tad higher amid signs of stabilization in China’s economic slowdown. Hang Seng rose impressively and Nikkei 225 surged by over 1 per cent as rising oil prices boosted oil explorers while exporter stocks climbed amid a weaker yen. US stocks rose on Wednesday as a rally in crude prices bolstered shares of energy producers while better-than-expected earnings lifted bank shares. On the economic front, US housing data disappointed as starts fell 9 per cent to a 1.05 million annualized rate in September.

Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 577569 with a total turnover of Rs. 41925.18 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 4059859 with a total turnover of Rs. 290915.16 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 368065 with a total turnover of Rs. 27016.11 Crore.
The FIIs on 19/10/2016 stood as net buyer in equity and net seller in debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 5590.84 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1477.54 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 5216.96 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1610.20 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 373.88 Crore and Rs. -132.66 Crore.
