The key domestic benchmark indices continued to trade lower in late morning deal on Tuesday as investors resort to a cautious approach ahead of a flurry of earning reports from major bluechips. Further, a mixed trend across markets in Asia amid speculation that the US Federal Reserve may raise interest rates this year heightens also curbed risk taking appetite.
At 12:15 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 28093.81, down by 85.27 points or by 0.3 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8690.8, down by 18.15 points or by 0.21 per cent.
Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, HDFC Bank, IDFC Bank, IDBI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank will unveil their September quarter earnings.
In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 28211.41 and intraday low of 28013.69, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8722.65 and intraday low of 8663.45.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 416.55,-2.26%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 435.35,-1.92%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 836.25,-1.51%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1323.45,-1.19%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2401.00,-1.11%), among others.
Meanwhile, Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 526.65,+1.03%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3115.15,+0.83%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 177.45,+0.80%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5756.50,+0.78%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 751.25,+0.55%), were among top gainers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, consumer durables and oil&gas stocks were leading the decline, falling as much as 0.76 per cent and 0.72 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2758, shares advanced were 1219 while 1344 shares declined and 195 were unchanged.
