Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty hold early gains; broader markets outperform : 24/10/2016 12:31

The key domestic benchmark indices continued to trade higher, holding early gains, helped by rally in the broader market with Mid Cap and Small Cap indices rising between 0.2 to 0.7 per cent. On the corporate front, ICICI Bank, SBI, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki were among notable gainers, while Wipro, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank and TCS remained on loser side.
At 12:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 28146.04, up by 68.86 points or by 0.25 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8705.6, up by 12.55 points or by 0.14 per cent.
In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 28192.2 and intraday low of 28075.95, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8723.05 and intraday low of 8684.15.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 293.60,+2.75%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 285.10,+2.66%), State Bank of India (Rs. 264.00,+2.17%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1523.30,+1.63%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 447.00,+1.49%), among others.
Meanwhile, Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 482.65,-3.32%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1132.80,-1.79%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 306.40,-0.97%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 522.35,-0.81%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1031.00,-0.68%), were among top losers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, bank and PSU stocks were leading the gain, adding as much as 0.77 per cent and 0.76 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2839, shares advanced were 1642 while 973 shares declined and 224 were unchanged.
