The key domestic benchmark indices were trading in a negative terrain in the morning trading session amid flattish trade in most markets across Asia and a bearish finish at Wall Street overnight.
The latest batch of corporate earnings from Europe and the US signaled a mixed outlook for the world economy, while the rally in crude oil fizzled out amid doubts that leading producers will cut output, curbing risk taking appetite.
Shares of ACC, Wipro and Cairn India will be in focus as these companies reveal their September quarter earnings.
At 10:20 AM, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was at 28035.03 down by 94.81 points or by 0.34 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8667.05 points, trading lower by 32.35 points or by 0.37 per cent.
The BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 28163.41 and an intraday low of 27990.69 while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8709.1 and an intraday low of 8660.05
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 444.50,+1.44 per cent), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3098.90,+0.76 per cent), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 286.85,+0.58 per cent), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 279.05,+0.56 per cent), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2412.00,+0.51 per cent), among others.
Meanwhile, Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1071.05,-1.60 per cent), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1339.95,-1.41 per cent), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 277.55,-1.40 per cent), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 531.45,-1.36 per cent), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 423.70,-1.11 per cent), were among the top losers on BSE.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total 2175 shares traded, 1000 shares advanced, 1054 shares declined while 121 were unchanged.
On the global front, Asian stocks were trading flat today as string of mixed corporate earnings and a drop in oil prices clouded the outlook for the global economy. US stocks closed lower in the previous trading session amid disappointing results from the likes of Verizon Communications Inc. and EBay Inc.
