The Indian benchmarks are likely to open higher on Thursday tracking firm cues from Asian peers after US Federal Reserve announced to hold its key short-term interest rate steady. On the global front, Asian stocks were trading higher after the Bank of Japan unveiled plan to overhaul monetary policy and steepen the yield curve. In another boost to market sentiments, the US Federal Reserve in its policy decision announced to hold its key short-term interest rate steady. Boosted by the development, US stocks ended higher on overnight trade on Wednesday.

Back home, the Indian equities ended marginally lower on Wednesday, paring early gains, as investors resorted to profit booking ahead of the US Federal Reserve policy decision due later in the day. The 30-share BSE SENSEX closed at 28507.42, down by 15.78 points or by 0.06 per cent, while the NSE Nifty ended at 8777.15, up by 1.25 points or by 0.01 per cent.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 175.35,-1.46%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 253.80,-1.26%), State Bank of India (Rs. 251.35,-1.14%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 269.65,-0.86%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 256.00,-0.68%), among others.

On the flip side, Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 369.30,+1.05%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 912.20,+1.00%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 598.00,+0.85%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 322.00,+0.69%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 483.25,+0.64%), were among top gainers on the BSE.

On the sectoral front, FMCG and PSU stocks emerged as top losers, falling as much as 0.58 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 3075, shares advanced were 1481 while 1381 shares declined and 213 were unchanged.

The top traded volumes on NSE Nifty were Hindalco Industries Ltd. 14671999.00, State Bank of India 12817180.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 11578862.00, ITC Ltd. 8800312.00, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. 7132314.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 93.95 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 18705.44 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 201344 with a total turnover of Rs. 14158.13 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 471454 with a total turnover of Rs. 33598.32 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 3376896 with a total turnover of Rs. 240969.61 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 305541 with a total turnover of Rs. 22187.71 Crore.

The FIIs on 21/09/2016 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 4551.11 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1280.64 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 3445.40 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1214.76 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 1105.71 Crore and Rs. 65.88.
