Pre Session- Sensex, Nifty likely to start the day on flat note

Trends on SGX Nifty indicate a flat opening for the broader indices in India, a gain of 18 points or 0.16 percent. Nifty futures were trading around 11,089-level on the Singaporean Exchange. The government may exempt foreign portfolio investors from additional surcharge may bolster investor sentiment today. In that regard, the finance minister will meet market participants, including senior officials of foreign portfolio investors and mutual funds, later in the day to ascertain views on current issues relating to financial markets. Investors will react to June quarter earnings while the industrial production data for June, set to be declared today, will also be on their radar. They will also track global cues, any progress in monsoon, foreign fund flow, rupee's trajectory, and oil price movement. As many as 250 companies including BHEL, BPCL, Cadila Healthcare, GAIL India, Hindalco are scheduled to announce their results for the June quarter earnings today. The rupee settled at 20 paise higher against US dollar and snapped its five-day losing streak on August 8, tracking sharp gains in domestic equities after reports of rollback of a tax surcharge on foreign portfolio investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 371.12 points, or 1.43 percent, to 26,378.19, the S&P 500 gained 54.11 points, or 1.88 percent, to 2,938.09 and the Nasdaq Composite added 176.33 points, or 2.24 percent, to 8,039.16. RBI trimmed India’s GDP growth forecast for this financial year to 6.9 per cent from 7 per cent earlier. The governor clarified that future policy actions will be dependent on upcoming data. Asian shares caught the tail of a Wall Street rally on Friday, helped by China’s better-than-expected export figures but fresh concerns about Sino-US trade ties are likely to limit gains in the region. Among others, Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL) that is currently facing a liquidity crisis, has notified exchanges that it has submitted a draft resolution plan to creditors and will not be able to meet immediate payment obligations. On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark ended at 37327.36 up by 636.86 points or by 1.74 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 11032.45 up by 176.95 points.
