Mid-Session: Sensex surges 130 pts, Nifty hits 9,800; IT, Teck stocks extend rally

The key benchmark indices extended rally in late morning deal on Tuesday, undermining mixed cues from Asian peers, amid sustained fund inflows by foreign and domestic investors amid optimism over June quarter corporate earnings. Index heavyweight, State Bank of India rose over 1 per cent after its central board approved divestment of 80 million shares in SBI Life through an initial public offering (IPO), at a meeting on Monday. On the sectoral front, IT and Teck stocks extended rally for the second day and emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.56 per cent and 1.17 per cent respectively, ahead of the beginning of June quarter earnings seasons this week. IT bellwether TCS will release Q1 results on July 13, 2017, while Infosys will declare its April-June quarter results on July 14, 2017. Among others, sugar stocks were trading higher after government hiked import duty on sugar prices.

At 12:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 31845.09, up by 129.45 points or by 0.41 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9817.15, up by 46.1 points or by 0.47 per cent.

In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 31852.43 and intraday low of 31744.27, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9819.55 and intraday low of 9783.75.

Shares of Donear Industries jumped over 7 per cent after India’s leading fashion fabric brand acquired Bhiwani Textile from Kumar Mangalam Birla-led Grasim Industries for undisclosed amount.

Among others, Alembic Pharmaceuticals sourged over 5 per cent after the drug maker said that it has received US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) tentative approval for Dabigatran Etexilate Capsules, 150 mg.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 461.55,+3.31%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 274.80,+2.52%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 982.60,+2.46%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1391.90,+1.77%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 162.50,+1.47%), among others.

On the flip side, Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 541.05,-1.53%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 256.35,-1.10%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 373.15,-0.61%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 331.25,-0.60%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2717.65,-0.52%), were among top losers on the BSE.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2764, shares advanced were 1430 while 1172 shares declined and 162 were unchanged.
