Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty trade flat; broader markets outperform

The key benchmark turned choppy in the late morning deal on Wednesday and slipped in negative terrain, tracking weak cues from Asian peers, as investors reported to profit booking after strong rally in the last few sessions. Outperforming the benchmark indices, the broader markets were trading higher, with MIDCAP and SMLCAP indices gaining as much as 0.42 per cent and 0.15 per cent, respectively. On the sectoral front, IT and Teck stocks emerged as top losers as investors booked profit after strong rally in the last two session, falling as much as 0.24 per cent and 0.11 per cent respectively, ahead of the beginning of June quarter earnings seasons this week. IT bellwether TCS will release Q1 results on July 13, 2017, while Infosys will declare its April-June quarter results on July 14, 2017.
At 12:17 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 31737.63, down by 9.46 points or by 0.03 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 9790.35, up by 4.3 points or by 0.04 per cent.
In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 31865.69 and intraday low of 31731.43, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9823 and intraday low of 9787.7.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2453.95,-0.73%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 328.40,-0.61%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1670.50,-0.60%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1382.00,-0.59%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 954.05,-0.49%), among others.
On the flip side, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 165.10,+2.99%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1126.25,+1.73%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 275.00,+1.10%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 460.80,+0.84%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1505.75,+0.71%), were among top gainers on the BSE.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2678, shares advanced were 1344 while 1197 shares declined and 137 were unchanged.
