Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty trade flat; broader markets outperform

The Indian equities moved in a narrow range with slightly positive bias in late morning deal on Wednesday, tracking mixed cue from Asian peers, as investors weighed rising geo-political tensions after North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile which landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Reuters said. Outperforming the benchmark indices, the broader markets were trading higher, with MIDCAP and SMLCAP indices rose as much as 0.62 per cent and 0.79 per cent, respectively.

At 12:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 31212.63, up by 2.84 points or by 0.01 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9621.55, up by 8.25 points or by 0.09 per cent.

In the choppy trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 31284.64 and intraday low of 31189.9, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9637.1 and intraday low of 9607.35.

Shares of Texmaco Rail & Engineering rallied as much as 12 per cent in intra-day after media report suggested that Adventz Group has signed a USD 2 billion-plus agreement with Israel’s Lesico group to collaborate in light rail transit (LRT) projects in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Among others, Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC) rose over 3 per cent in intra-day after the drug maker entered into a long-term agreement with South Korea’s Samsung BioLogics for the manufacture of an experimental medicine to treat psoriasis.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1384.50,+2.20%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1124.00,+1.38%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1439.00,+1.15%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 265.05,+0.99%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 431.80,+0.97%), among others.

On the flip side, ITC Ltd. (Rs. 332.95,-1.23%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 375.20,-1.08%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 951.00,-0.99%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 257.80,-0.81%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1628.55,-0.72%), were among top losers on the BSE.

On the sectoral front, metal and oil&gas stocks were among top gainers, adding as much as 0.90 per cent and 0.67 per cent respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2644, shares advanced were 1570 while 922 shares declined and 152 were unchanged.
