Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty extend rally; TCS up 3%

The key benchmark indices extended gaining streak in late morning deal on Monday, tracking firm cues from Asian peers, as foreign and domestic investors widened bet on Indian equities amid optimism over June quarter corporate earnings. Index heavyweight TCS rose 3.6 per cent as the IT bellwether is scheduled to kick off the earnings season for the first quarter of this fiscal on July 13. On the sectoral front, all the indices were trading in green, except FMCG stock, while IT and Teck stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.61 per cent and 1.57 per cent respectively.
At 12:25 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 31611.97, up by 251.34 points or by 0.8 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9722.05, up by 56.25 points or by 0.58 per cent.
In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 31621.79 and intraday low of 31471.41, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9765.9 and intraday low of 9646.45.
Tata Motors surged nearly 5 per cent on the Bombay stock Exchange after its UK arm Jaguar Land Rover reported 11 per cent year-on-year growth in sales at 51,591 units in June 2017.
Among others, infra lender IDFC fell nearly 5 per cent after the board of directors of company to evaluate a strategic combination of relevant financial services companies (including insurance) of the Shriram Group with the IDFC Group and approval for entering into a confidentiality, exclusivity and standstill agreement.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2416.15,+3.60%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1146.50,+2.66%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 163.45,+2.38%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 446.95,+2.32%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 562.45,+2.32%), among others.
On the flip side, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1359.80,-1.11%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 332.05,-0.61%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 551.00,-0.51%), were among top losers on the BSE.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2620, shares advanced were 1536 while 946 shares declined and 138 were unchanged.
