Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty hit lifetime highs on firm global cues; Bharti up 3%

The Indian equities continued to trade higher in late morning deal on Friday amid sustained buying by foreign and domestic investors, tracking positive global cues. All the sectoral indices, barring oil&gas, were trading in positive terrain, led realty and healthcare stocks with gains over 1 per cent. Bharti Airtel jumped nearly 3 per cent after the telecom major said it has received approvals from market regulator Sebi, BSE and NSE for the proposed merger with Telenor India. At 12:15 hours, the 30-share barometer Sensex was at 31270.23, up by 132.64 points or by 0.43 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9648, up by 31.9 points or by 0.33 per cent. In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intra-day high of 31332.56 and intraday low of 31190.4, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9673.5 and intraday low of 9637.45.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3835.95,+2.72%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 376.70,+2.60%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 527.85,+2.48%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 162.90,+1.69%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 355.00,+1.49%), among others. On the flip side, Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1079.00,-1.50%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 491.80,-1.23%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 403.30,-1.22%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 205.35,-1.16%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 317.60,-0.77%), were among the top losers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, realty and pharma stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.08 per cent and 1.02 per cent, respectively. The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2681, shares advanced were 1493 while 1027 shares declined and 161 were unchanged.
