Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty hold early gain; Hero MotoCorp up 2.6%

The Indian equities extended gains from the opening session on Thursday on sustained fund inflows after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted above average monsoon rainfall in 2017 which is likely to boost economic growth. Adding to it, firm cues from fellow Asian peers also gave a lift to market sentiment. Hero MotoCorp rose over 2.5 per cent even after the country's biggest two wheeler maker reported a 14 per cent decline in profit at Rs 717.75 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2017 against Rs 833.29 crore in FY16, weighed down by BS III discounts. Among others, Union Bank of India jumped nearly 3 per cent after the state-run lender said that it plans to raise fund worth Rs 6,350 crore by selling bonds and shares in 2017-18.
At 12:22 hour, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was trading 30348.47, up by 100.3 points or by 0.33 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9449.05, up by 41.75 points or by 0.44 per cent.
The Indian Rupee were trading 24 paise higher at 64.56 against the greenback amid fresh selling of dollar by banks and exporters, while sustained fund inflows by foreign portfolio investors also boosted home currency’s movement. In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intra-day high of 30366.43 and intraday low of 30296.32, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9450.65 and intraday low of 9426.65. The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3410.00,+2.64%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2959.70,+2.08%), State Bank of India (Rs. 298.50,+1.32%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 276.95,+1.11%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1170.00,+1.07%), among others.
On the flip side, Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 366.55,-1.65%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 986.20,-0.97%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 414.50,-0.75%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2581.00,-0.73%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 209.30,-0.57%), were among the top losers on BSE. On the sectoral front, metal and realty stocks emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.14 per cent and 1.06 per cent, respectively. The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2861, shares advanced were 1402 while 1306 shares declined and 153 were unchanged.
