Indian equity benchmarks were trading in a narrow range during noon trade on Monday as wholesale price index (WPI) for March softened to 5.7 per cent, against 6.55 per cent in February, while weak cues from fellow Asian peers as geopolitical issues continued to dominate global markets, too dampened sentiment at D-Street.

At 12:10 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 29,415.9 down by 45.55 points or 0.15 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 9,132.55 down by 18.25 points or 0.2 per cent.

Besides, traders keenly eyed the March quarter corporate earnings and companies' FY18 outlook.

Market witnessed selling pressure mainly in the metal and Teck sector stocks.

Shares of drug major Sun Pharma fell nearly 2.32 per cent on reports that the US FDA has issued 11 observations to its Dadra unit.

Major show spoilers were NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 160.70,-2.37%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 676.25,-2.32%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 286.70,-1.46%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1065.70,-1.11%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 183.35,-0.95%), among others.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 388.45,+2.41%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2694.90,+2.03%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 201.45,+1.03%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1487.60,+0.86%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1373.00,+0.63%), among others.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE, out of the total 2873 shares traded, 1367 advanced while 1356 shares declined and 150 remained unchanged.

On the global front, most of the Asian markets were red as investor sentiment hurt by soft US economic data and continued geopolitical tensions over Syria, Afghanistan and the Korean Peninsula.
