Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty stay under stress; Goa Carbon hits 52-week high on strong Q4

The Indian equities continued to trade in negative terrain in late morning deal as investors shifted focus to safe heaven assets such as currency, bonds and gold, in wake of rising tensions in Korean Peninsula after a warning from North Korea of a nuclear attack on the United States as its Navy moved toward the western Pacific. The caution also prevailed in the market ahead to the start of earnings season, with IT bellwether Infosys slated to kick off the fourth quarter results tomorrow. Adani Power fell nearly 6 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange after the Supreme Court shoots down any relief to the company in the contentious issue of compensation to its power plants. Among others, Goa Carbon rallied nearly 18 per cent, hitting fresh 52-week high, in early trade after the company posted a standalone net profit of Rs 5.08 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2017 (Q4FY17), compared to Rs 41 lakh in the same quarter last year.

At 12:29 hour, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was trading at 29671, down by 117.35 points or by 0.39 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9197.1, down by 39.9 points or by 0.43 per cent.

During the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intra-day high of 29838.82 and intra-day low of 29549.74, while the NSE Nifty touched intra-day high of 9246.40 and intra-day low of 9161.80.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 481.10,-1.47%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 6168.05,-1.28%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 379.95,-1.23%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 467.00,-1.22%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 330.70,-1.12%), among others.

On the flip side, HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1447.70,+0.60%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3218.00,+0.52%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 290.00,+0.28%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 969.00,+0.19%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1073.90,+0.10%), were among the top gainers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, realty and consumer durables stocks were leading the decline, falling as much as 1.04 per cent and 1.01 per cent, respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2869, shares advanced were 902 while 1842 shares declined and 125 were unchanged.
