Mid-Session: Sensex extends early gain, Nifty breaches 9,200; RIL hits fresh 9-yr high

The Indian equities extended day’s gain in late morning deal on Monday, tracking firm cues from Asian peers, as investors were buoyed by higher-than-expected GDP growth estimates by the finance minister. Arun Jaitley on Saturday pegged India's GDP growth at 7.2 per cent in 2017 and 7.7 per cent in 2018. Index heavyweight, Reliance Industries jumped over 4 per cent, hitting record 9-years high, after its telecom arm, Reliance Jio, becomes largest broadband provider with 72 mn users.
At 12:25 hour, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was trading at 29825.2, up by 204.7 points or by 0.69 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9214.55, up by 40.8 points or by 0.44 per cent.
United Spirits dipped nearly 8 per cent after the Supreme Court order ban on liquor sales close to the national and state highways. Among others, Radico Khaitan, Associated Alcohols & Breweries and Globus Spirits fell between 5-8 per cent on the BSE.
Jet Airways India soared nearly 3 per cent after price of jet fuel or Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) was slashed by Rs 2,811.38 per kiloliter with effect from April 1.
During the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 29828.85 and intraday low of 29705.72, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9220.65 and intraday low of 9192.4.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1369.25,+3.79%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1633.55,+3.55%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 502.20,+2.32%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 385.15,+2.31%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 282.00,+1.77%), among others.
On the flip side, Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 338.30,-3.33%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 507.05,-1.61%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1008.90,-1.17%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2781.10,-0.94%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1433.15,-0.63%), were among the top losers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, capital goods and consumer durables stocks were leading the gain, adding as much as 2.43 per cent and 1.11 per cent, respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2847, shares advanced were 1938 while 792 shares declined and 117 were unchanged.
