Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty trade in red; broader markets outperform

Snapping three day gaining streak, the Indian equities slipped into negative terrain on the first day of April series futures and options contracts, weighed down by profit booking across IT and Teck stocks. However, firm buying across broader market, with MIDCAP and SMLCAP indices gaining 0.68 per cent each, capped day’s losses. CL Educate made a disappointing debut at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today, falling 21 per cent against the issue price of Rs 502. The stock was listed at Rs 398 on BSE.
At 12:25 hour, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was trading at 29593.69, down by 53.73 points or by 0.18 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9160.45, down by 13.3 points or by 0.14 per cent.
During the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 29665.24 and intraday low of 29552.61, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9181.25 and intraday low of 9152.1.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1441.90,-1.49%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 345.70,-1.41%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 279.30,-1.17%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 591.50,-1.03%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2420.05,-0.97%), among others.
On the flip side, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 387.00,+2.71%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 195.10,+2.52%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 652.55,+1.86%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1293.00,+1.76%), ACC Ltd. (Rs. 1443.55,+1.73%), were among the top gainers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, Teck and IT durables stocks were leading the decline, falling as much as 0.74 per cent each.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2719, shares advanced were 1536 while 973 shares declined and 210 were unchanged.
