Indian equity benchmarks trimmed initial gains but continued to trade in the positive terrain during the noon trading session on Friday as investors now braced for the final results of the assembly elections, on March 11, after reacted to the exit polls predictions in which BJP emerged as the single largest party in UP, and amidst mixed cues from fellow Asian peers.

At 12:10 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 28,963.05 up by 33.92 points or 0.12 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 8,937.8 up by 10.8 points or 0.12 per cent.

Further, UP election results will have a key influence on PM Modi’s chances of winning a second term in 2019. Also, investors remained wary ahead of the US Fed meeting on March 14-15 to decide on the US interest rate hike.

Besides, traders keenly eyed the industrial production (IIP) data for January and the US jobs data, scheduled to be released later in the day, too influenced domestic sentiment.

Meanwhile, buying momentum was witnessed mainly in the capital goods and consumer durables sector stocks.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3319.00,+1.38%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1021.05,+0.93%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 362.75,+0.65%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2535.00,+0.61%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1485.65,+0.59%), among others.

Major show spoilers were Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 191.25,-1.54%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 376.95,-0.65%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 271.80,-0.53%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 188.90,-0.45%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 317.30,-0.28%), among others.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE, out of the total 2730 shares traded, 1314 advanced while 1249 shares declined and 167 remained unchanged.
