Indian equities are set to open on flat note on Thursday, tracking mixed cues from fellow Asian peers as Wall Street ended on subdued note in overnight trade, as investors remained wary ahead of Donald Trump’s taking charged on Friday. Muted trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,431.00, down by 4.00 points or 0.05 per cent, at 10:50 AM Singapore time, also signaled a flat start for Sensex. Investors are likely to react to falling crude oil prices and fresh concerns over US rate hike after the Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen commented that the improving employment scenario in the economy makes case for gradually lifting interest rates. Back home, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) turned net buyer in equity market after the government put on hold its controversial circular on taxing indirect transfers of Indian assets. Banking stocks will remain in focus today as slew of private sector lender such as Axis Bank, Federal Bank, Lakshmi Vilash Bank and YES Bank will release their earnings report later today. 

On Wednesday, the Indian equity benchmarks ended tad higher amid fresh buying by retail and foreign portfolio investors after the Income Tax (I-T) Department put on hold its controversial circular on taxing indirect transfers of Indian assets. Investors were also buoyed by strong earnings report by Indian Inc and clarity over GST rollout. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27257.64, up by 21.98 points or by 0.08 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8417, up by 19 points or by 0.23 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were Hindalco Industries Ltd. 13047979.00, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. 11996245.00, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. 11941771.00, Idea Cellular Ltd. 9667634.00, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. 9444964.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 92.65 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 19449.61 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 207615 with a total turnover of Rs. 14203.55 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 615310 with a total turnover of Rs. 41246.07 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 4733286 with a total turnover of Rs. 333944.45 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 397552 with a total turnover of Rs. 27445.77 Crore.

The FIIs on January 17, 2017 stood as net buyer in equity, but net seller in debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3471.58 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 179.83 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 3285.84 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 560.91 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 185.74 Crore and Rs. -381.08.
