Indian equities are poised to open on flat to higher note on Wednesday, tracking firm cues from fellow Asian peers after US market ended higher in overnight trade, extending post-election rally to the New Year. Firm trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,203.00, up by 12.5 points or 0.15 per cent, at 10:40 AM Singapore time, also signaled a positive start for Sensex. The investor would react to fresh hurdle in the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) amid turf between the Centre and states over double control and compensation, which indicates that the April 1 deadline is likely to be missed. Concerns over falling rupee, rising crude prices, and weak Q3 earnings may also hit market sentiments.

On Tuesday, Indian equity benchmarks ended tad higher, helped by strong rally across consumer durables and oil&gas space, tracking firm cues from fellow Asian peers. Oil marketing companies extended rally for the second day after government hiked petrol and diesel prices on Sunday. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 26643.24, up by 47.79 points or by 0.18 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8192.25, up by 12.75 points or by 0.16 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were State Bank of India 15963085.00, Bank of Baroda 10690916.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 9306097.00, ITC Ltd. 7508925.00, Hindalco Industries Ltd. 6841113.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 84.93 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 15711.89 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 225639 with a total turnover of Rs. 14988.42 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 492756 with a total turnover of Rs. 32238.66 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 3680314 with a total turnover of Rs. 250819.20 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 241909 with a total turnover of Rs. 16477.35 Crore.

The FIIs on January 03, 2017 stood as net seller in both equity and debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 867.26 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 49.63 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 1215.04 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 54.15 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -347.78 Crore and Rs. -4.52.
