Indian equities are poised to open higher on Friday, tracking firm cues from fellow Asian peers, as strong IIP and CPI data coupled with better earnings report by TCS may give a boost to market sentiment. Firm trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,442.00, up by 15.00 points or 0.18 per cent, at 10:40 AM Singapore time, also signaled a positive start for Sensex. On the global front, Asian stocks were trading higher, while Wall Street ended lower in overnight trade. Back home, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) surprised Dalal-Street on Thursday by reporting a better-than-expected year-on-year growth of 11.2 per cent in its consolidated net profit after taxes (PAT) at Rs 6,814 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2016. Investors would also react to India’s industrial activity (IIP) in November which hit a 12-month high of 5.7 per cent, while CPI inflation in December declined to 3.41 per cent from 3.63 per cent in the previous month. Stocks of Infosys will remain in focus as the country’s second largest software exporter would unveil its third quarter earnings report today.

On Thursday, Indian equity benchmarks extended their rally for the third straight session amid sustained buying by retail and foreign portfolio investors, despite muted cues from fellow Asian peers. IT index rallied nearly 2 per cent on hopes that newly elected US President Donald Trump may not impose stringent visa rules, while pharma index tumbled nearly 1 per cent after Trump said he will create new procedures for bidding on drugs. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27247.16, up by 106.75 points or by 0.39 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8407.2, up by 26.55 points or by 0.32 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were Idea Cellular Ltd. 15143437.00, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. 15107520.00, Hindalco Industries Ltd. 14225168.00, State Bank of India 11282323.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 10646618.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 101.36 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 18208.89 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 195309 with a total turnover of Rs. 13300.48 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 546634 with a total turnover of Rs. 36662.85 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 6639495 with a total turnover of Rs. 481190.60 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 399445 with a total turnover of Rs. 27258.43 Crore.

The FIIs on January 12, 2017 stood as net seller in both equity and debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3936.03 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1543.63 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 4621.48 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1543.67 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -685.45 Crore and Rs. -0.04.
