Indian equities are poised to open higher on Thursday as Nifty50 futures charts on the Singapore Stock Exchange indicate an upward trajectory ahead while investors would also digest President-elect Donald Trump's first news conference on the policies to be pursued by his government. Firm trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,427.50, up by 30.5 points or 0.36 per cent, at 11:08 AM Singapore time, also signaled a positive start for Sensex. On the global front, Asian stocks were trading mixed with Shanghai Composite was up, while Nikkei and Hang Seng indices were under pressure. In the overnight trade, Wall Street ended higher in choppy trade, helped by rally in energy and technology stocks. Back home, stocks of TCS will remain in focus as the country’s largest software exporter would unveil its third quarter earnings report today. On the economy front, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel warned against steep interest rate subvention.

On Wednesday, Indian equity benchmarks continued their gaining streak for the second straight session amid sustained buying by retail and foreign portfolio investors, despite muted cues from fellow Asian peers. Metal index rallied over 4 per cent as Chinese commodity futures soared after the country’s top steelmaking province promised to further reduce production capacity, the Reuters reported. IT stocks ended tad lower amid concerns over profitability margins if the new US bill titled ‘Protect and Grow American Jobs Act’ gets passed by US Congress. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27140.41, up by 240.85 points or by 0.9 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8380.65, up by 92.05 points or by 1.11 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were Hindalco Industries Ltd. 24145144.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 17786981.00, State Bank of India 13415303.00, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. 12282587.00, Tata Steel Ltd. 11431250.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 110.47 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 21562.17 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 244747 with a total turnover of Rs. 16827.92 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 619869 with a total turnover of Rs. 41931.86 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 5815514 with a total turnover of Rs. 410314.14 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 426667 with a total turnover of Rs. 30025.03 Crore.

The FIIs on January 11, 2017 stood as net seller in both equity and debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3597.89 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 729.43 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 3711.12 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 2139.49 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -113.23 Crore and Rs. -1410.06.
