The key domestic benchmark indices continued to hold morning gains during the noon trading session on account of buying in front line blue chip counters including Tata Motors, Gail, Adani Ports and Tata Steel among others.

The 30-share benchmark index was trading at 26857.74 up by 131.19 points or by 0.49 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8272.5 up by 36.45 points or by 0.44 per cent.

The extent of impact of demonetization on third quarter corporate earnings would now chart the direction of the market in the coming days. Investors are eying financial results for the quarter ended December 31, 2016. IndusInd Bank and ISGEC Heavy Engineering among others are scheduled to announce their results today.

In the bullish trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 26902.05 and an intraday low of 26804.1, while the NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8288.1 and an intraday low of 8261.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 512.50,+2.43%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 441.45,+1.41%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 288.50,+1.30%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1210.00,+1.26%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 200.50,+1.24%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 448.30,-0.96%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 185.40,-0.46%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3057.50,-0.28%), State Bank of India (Rs. 246.50,-0.20%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 318.60,-0.13%), among others.

Among the sectors, Oil&Gas index was at 12608.19 up by 155.69 points or by 1.25%. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 474.30,+2.46%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 666.40,+2.08%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 348.00,+1.55%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 441.45,+1.41%), Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (Rs. 936.00,+1.36%),.

On the flip side, Realty index was at 1362.21 down by -1.29 points or by -0.09%. Unitech Ltd. (Rs. 4.57,-1.08%), Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 177.50,-1.03%), Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd. (Rs. 360.50,-0.95%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 125.60,-0.75%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 80.20,-0.68%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2719 , shares advanced were 1606 while 975 shares declined and 138 were unchanged.

On the global front, Asian peers were trading mixed as investor sentiment soured after the Dow retreated further from the 20,000 mark and oil prices plunged as much as 4 per cent overnight. Investors are awaiting remarks from key US policymakers this week, including Fed Chair Janet Yellen and President-elect Donald Trump.
