The key domestic benchmark indices slipped into negative terrain in late morning deal on Wednesday, paring early gains, as caution prevailed in the market ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting outcome later today. The investors will keep an eye on the US Federal Reserve policy meet to know Janet Yellen’s stand on the much-awaited and widely anticipated interest rate hike.
At 12:20 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 26662.51, down by 35.31 points or by 0.13 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8200.1, down by 21.7 points or by 0.26 per cent.
Coal India tanked over 3 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange after the state-run company reported a 77 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit at Rs 600 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2016, compared to Rs 2,654 crore in the same quarter last fiscal.
In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 26736.34 and intraday low of 26624.66, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8229.4 and intraday low of 8190.7
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 296.45,-3.04%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 570.60,-1.31%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 308.40,-1.11%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3167.00,-1.09%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1263.75,-1.03%), among others.
On the flip side, Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 465.05,+2.81%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1058.40,+1.78%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 474.75,+0.94%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 467.90,+0.93%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 917.20,+0.91%), were among top gainers on BSE.
On the sectoral front, metal and PSU stocks emerged as top losers, falling as much as 1 per cent and 0.73 per cent respectively.
The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was flat. On BSE out of total shares traded 2507, shares advanced were 1180 while 1186 shares declined and 141 were unchanged.
