Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a gap down opening on Wednesday tracking weakness across markets in Asia and an overnight sell-off at Wall Street as anxiety ahead of US Presidential elections, the US Federal Reserve interest rate decision and US October payrolls data curbs risk taking appetite. Latest polls indicated that Democrat Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump are in a tight race for the White House, investors across the globe are in cautious mood ahead of November 8, 2016-the elections day. Losses in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for November delivery which were trading at 8,564.5, down by 84.5 points or 0.99 per cent at 10:20 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open lower today. Shares of HT Media and IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company will be in focus as the companies unveil their September quarter earnings data. Further, auto stocks will also be eyed amid the October sales data. Meanwhile, India’s manufacturing sector is showing sense of picking up with infrastructure growth hitting a three-month high at 5 per cent in September 2016 while the Manufacturing PMI surging to a 22-month high at 54.4 in October from 52.1 in September. With key global events around the corner, the 30-share Sensex on Tuesday fell by 53.6 points or by 0.19 per cent to end at 27,876.61.

Heightened anxiety ahead of the US elections took toll on Asian stocks today. A survey by ABC News/Washington Post put Trump one percentage point ahead of Clinton, adding to the nervousness of traders, following the news that the FBI has reopened its investigation into the Democrat’s use of an unauthorised e-mail server. A Trump win is seen as negative for markets and could also cut the odds of a potential Fed interest rate hike in December. The Fed is likely to keep interest rates steady on Wednesday but may offer some cues over tightening next month. Shanghai Composite fell, Hang Seng tumbled over 1 per cent and Nikkei 225 tanked over 1 per cent as a stronger yen curbed the lure for exporter stocks. US stocks ended lower on Tuesday amid the looming anxiety surrounding US elections. Meanwhile, a US manufacturing gauge rose to 51.9 in October from 51.5 in September, signalling a faster pace of expansion.
