Post Session: Sensex sinks 143 pts on US rate hike worries; Nifty ends below 8,850 :17/10/2016 16:17

The Indian equities ended lower on Monday amid surge in selling across telecom, auto, realty, capital goods and technology sectors, tracking negative cues from most markets across Asia as bets that the US Federal Reserve is moving closer to tightening interest rates curbs risk taking appetite.

The 30-share BSE SENSEX closed at 27529.97, down by 143.63 points or by 0.52 per cent and the NSE Nifty closed at 8520.4, down by 63 points or by 0.73 per cent.

Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Friday reiterated her call for gradual rate hikes as robust retail sales data upped the odds of December tightening.

During the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 27803.21 and intraday low of 27488.3, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8615.4 and intraday low of 8506.15.

Private sector lender ICICI Bank surged nearly 7 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange after the Essar group signed a deal with Russia’s Rosneft, United Capital Partners and Trafigura Group Pte. to sell 98 per cent of its asset to repay loans.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1313.40,-3.22%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3404.15,-2.24%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1182.90,-2.07%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1237.80,-1.87%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2754.30,-1.80%), among others.

On the flip side, ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 258.55,+6.91%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 147.45,+1.76%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 849.40,+0.88%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 278.45,+0.69%), State Bank of India (Rs. 253.10,+0.48%), were among top gainers on the BSE.

On the sectoral front, auto and capital goods stocks were among top losers on BSE, falling as much as 2.12 per cent and 1.47 per cent respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3143, shares advanced were 1370 while 1581 shares declined and 192 were unchanged.
